The Lyceum's second bookbinding workshop with the talented Allie Thompson. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A 2 SESSION WORKSHOP, MUST BE AVAILABLE BOTH MAY 8TH AND 9TH 4:00-5:00PM TO WALK AWAY WITH FINISHED BOOK!
The structure we will learn dates back to the 2nd century CE and was first used to connect folded sheets of papyrus. It became associated with early Christians and spread from Coptic Egypt to the west along with the religion. Other binding methods slowly replaced it in Europe as book materials changed, but Coptic binding is enjoying a resurgence of popularity among modern binders. The pages and covers are attached by sewing alone, which makes the binding flexible, strong and attractive.
